Volunteer

At JWOC we firmly believe in the potential of volunteers to have a profound and lasting impact on the people and places where they work. Our university scholarship students in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, all of whom give back to their community by volunteering between 5 and 10 hours of their time per week on other JWOC projects, are a testament to this. Their skills, passion and energy are fuelling change in Southeast Asia every day.

JWOC also has a number of Cambodian and Laotian volunteers who are keen to improve their skills and experience while making a positive impact on the people in their country – they volunteer as teachers in our schools and Officers on our Clean Water and Microfinance Projects.

How you could help at JWOC

Building the capacity of people living in developing countries to make positive changes is a central aim of JWOC. While training and guidance is given by our full time staff to all of our teachers, clean water officers and microfinance officers, JWOC welcomes foreign volunteers that can offer particular skills that will leave a lasting impact on the people and places they work with.

As a busy organization with lots of projects running simultaneously we seek for volunteers who can look at what we do and propose how they might be able to add to that.

If you are interested in volunteering at JWOC please email us at info@journeyswithinourcommunity.org with a CV outlining any relevant experience you have, and a cover letter detailing what project(s) you would like to be involved with and how you would envisage contributing to our work. We ask for a minimum 2 week commitment.

Please note, we do not allow volunteers to build wells. Drilling and building a well is a specialist task and we employ a team of local experts to do this.

Volunteer “Fees”

JWOC does not charge any fees for volunteers who come to work with us. Nevertheless, we do encourage our volunteers to contribute financially to the ongoing running of the projects by fundraising at home as part of their commitment to JWOC. There is no minimum or maximum amount that we expect and the volunteer can choose which part of JWOC’s work they wish to contribute to when they make the donation. .

Shorter Experiences

If you would like to have a shorter experience with JWOC you can come for a couple of hours in the afternoon, spending one hour interacting with students in our community library and then participating in our Conversation Class. For this shorter experience we do ask that volunteers contribute to the Free Classes Project, either with a cash donation or with a donation of school supplies

Thank you to all 2011 volunteers
