Monthly workshops

In 2009 JWOC started a monthly training program for our scholarship students. The training sessions are designed for the students to learn and develop some extra skills to help them with their volunteer work and future career choices. The training alternates between those two subjects each month; one month for teacher development and the other is focused on career related topics. Expanding their experiences with their volunteer time and beyond will allow them to gain tools to create successful futures.

Teacher Development Training

Every other month we offer teacher development workshops to the scholarship students. These sessions are to help these first time teachers by giving them practical information useful for the classroom.

Every session starts off with presenting the scholarship students with an open forum lead by the Country Director Assistant. At this time the students have the chance to discuss needs or problems concerning their studies, volunteer time, JWOC classes, etc. with each other and the JWOC staff. The students are guided to list out these problems and then talk about possible solutions; providing an opportunity for the students to come together and work constructively as a team.

Then a member of the JWOC team will teach a new game functional for teaching or reviewing lessons with their classes. The team member responsible for the game lesson for that month presents their game along with a typed copy of instructions for the other members to include in their growing Games for the Classroom file. The session will continue with the subject and material of the workshop being presented. These workshops are created to introduce the teachers to practical methods of teaching and/ or for finding solutions to problems found in the classroom. These include: “Reading and Drawing”, “Teaching Children”, “Using Visual and Audio Aids”, “Lesson Planning” and much more. Each of these sessions are to develop a sense of camaraderie amongst the students as well as providing them with useful information and tools for the classroom.

Career Development Workshops

On alternate months to the above we present workshops that expose the students to career choices and the qualified individuals of those fields within the community. Most of the students who come to Luang Prabang to study a higher education are from the countryside and have little knowledge of the choices they have concerning jobs and their futures. We provide that exposure by giving the students an inside look into their options and a chance to learn firsthand from the professionals themselves.

For these workshops the students are prepped on the field of focus the month before at the end of the Teacher Development session. At this time the students decide on topics of interest to discuss with the professional representative and develop questions for each of these topics as a group. They are instructed to give individual thought on additional questions for the representative in the few weeks leading up to the actual meeting. Along with the JWOC staff, the students meet with the representative and are introduced to their field of work. Then the students conduct their Q & A session while also learning about the representative’s professional journey. The workshop concludes with a feedback session conducted with the JWOC staff on what they have seen and learned.

Many of the topics to be covered have been brainstormed and suggested from the scholarship students themselves. JWOC wants to provide a chance for them to explore their personal interests as well as to discover new ones. Some of the areas of interest are in tourism, education, hospitality, finances, medicine, textiles, etc. These broad areas of interest are dissected and some of the positions within them will be the focus at each of the sessions. Students will not only investigate career options but also learn the steps on how to acquire these jobs with workshops focusing on: creation of CV’s, interviews; the application process & follow up; networking and much more.
