Hmong

Hmong is a shining example of how the youth of Laos have begun to understand the importance and benefits of education and hard work. Hmong is a motivated, focused and hardworking student who always says he enjoys being busy. As a member of a nine person family, Hmong knows that he must find his own way to reach his goal of becoming a teacher. Since working from the age of eight, Hmong has always known that he would have to save enough of his own money to attend college. But after completing his first year at Teacher Training College he found that even with a job it was proving too difficult to save up enough for the following year. In 2009 Hmong became a JWOC scholarship student and has been teaching one of the JWOC Young Adult Classes for the last year. Along with his JWOC English class, Hmong has two jobs and is able to continue to receive top scores in his studies! We hope that Hmong’s hardworking spirit will show others less fortunate in the community that with enough desire and motivation one can reach their goal for a brighter future.

Kim

Joining the team in 2008, Kim was one of the first JWOC Scholarship Students in Laos. She has been studying accounting and marketing at the Northern Financial College of Laos. Kim, leaving her family in the countryside in 2000 for high school in Luang Prabang, understands that she must make some sacrifices in order to improve her family’s future. Since Kim is in her last year of school she has been able to find a part time job in marketing for Lao Telecom as well as working as a receptionist and assistant accountant for a hotel in town. Even though she is saddened by the distance from her family, she remains enthusiastic about her possibilities in the city. Kim has even been able to see success as a teacher with her entire class being the first to graduate through two terms at the JWOC language school. It has been a joy to see Kim transform from a shy girl unaware of her abilities into a young lady armed with experience and confidence.

Lue

Lue is one JWOC Scholarship Students who has shown us that you should never let up on your dreams (or stop smiling) even when obstacles come your way. After Lue finished high school he had to return home to the countryside to help his family with their farm. After working on the family farm for four years he became overwhelmed with how much he felt his family worked yet they never seemed to make any money. Lue left home determined to find a way to continue his education so that he could help to support his family further. He traveled to Luang Prabang to take the entrance exam for Teacher Training College. Even though Lue did not pass on his first attempt, he decided to try to find work in town, self study for a year and retake the exam the following year. The next year he passed the exam but soon realized that he would be unable to pay for his school and support himself in the city. Luckily he found out about JWOC and in 2009 he became a scholarship student. As a teacher for the JWOC Young Learners Class, he has been able to receive something most do not at his school, actual teaching experience outside of the classroom. We look forward to watching Lue make use of his opportunity as he continues his studies inside and outside of the classroom.

Lee

Lee became a JWOC Scholarship Student for the 2010-2011 academic year at Souphanouvong University. He joins JWOC in his fourth year and hopes to be graduating with an English Teaching degree. He hopes to one day be able to help improve Lao youth by teaching them English at an early age. His desire comes from his lack of opportunities while growing up in the countryside with his parents who are both disabled. Since his family only made enough money for food and the necessities; attending school after the primary level was a luxury. In order for Lee to continue his schooling he had to leave his family and join an orphanage school in town. Since then he has worked different jobs, from a waiter to a factory worker, to save up funds so support himself to go to University. Currently Lee teaches our youngest group of students at the JWOC Language school, The Beginners ages 7-10 years old. JWOC is happy to help such a motivated student make his dreams become a reality.
