  Induction Training

Induction Training

After the student has been chosen to receive a scholarship from JWOC, they must then complete Introduction Training before beginning their volunteer work. All the students are brought together to learn detailed information on who and what JWOC is, the purposes behind our work and the students’ responsibilities and function within the JWOC team. This is accomplished over about a two month period, with students attending weekly training sessions as a group. We want to ease them into the program and make sure they are prepared with the knowledge and tools to carry out their responsibilities as a JWOC Scholarship Student.

Just like the Introduction Training program developed in Cambodia, the students will begin with overall training sessions designed to educate them on JWOC and allow them to get to know one another and join together as a team. This will then move on to training sessions centered on the students volunteer work at the JWOC Language School.

Below are the training sessions students are required to attend in order to complete the Induction Training program:

Introduction

This session is centered on introducing students to the JWOC staff, each other and the existing JWOC team. The students are given a presentation on who JWOC is, what they do, where they work and how they as scholarship students will fit into the organization. This is also when they receive their JWOC scholarship student contracts and guidelines.

Emailing your sponsor

The students are given training on creating and writing their monthly emails to sponsors. Here we give the students ideas and examples to write about in their email updates. Students then schedule an appointment with JWOC staff in order to create an email account and for support with writing their first email.

Team Building

The students are given a chance to work together and have fun with a team building activity. The students have the chance to get to know each other in a fun environment while also learning to communicate and work as a team.

JWOC Language School

The students are introduced to the JWOC Language School in Muang Nga where they will be conducting their volunteer work. They learn about what the school offers, how it operates and their roles as teachers. Introduction to teaching – Students receive a lesson on the basic structure of teaching. This includes a model lesson conducted with them as the class. After the demonstration they are then taught the parts of a lesson and learn how to create a one for their class.

Introduction to Teaching

Students receive a lesson on the basic teaching methodology. This includes a model lesson conducted with them as the class. After the demonstration they are taught the parts of a lesson and learn how they will be able to use this as a guide to create their own effective language classes.

Textbooks and Materials

Students are introduced to the texts and materials used for the JWOC free classes. This includes understanding how to use and maintain their teacher files in correlation with the curriculum.

Observation and Registration

Over the course of these workshops the students will attend an existing free class at the language school so they can observe a fellow scholarship student teaching a class. With all of the above steps completed, the student will then be ready to take on their own class. Registration for new classes will be conducted at the school by the scholarship students.
