Laos Scholarship Program

Due to the success of the Scholarship Program in Cambodia JWOC started the Laos Scholarship Program in August 2008. Currently there are five students going to university in Laos, overseen by Nicole Long, JWOC's Laos Community Director. These students continue with the unique program started in Cambodia and give back 5 to 10 hours a week. They teach at our Laos Language School, they help with our Village Fund and they support Nicole as she works to find solutions to the problems facing the communities in Laos. Below are our Laos students, including an excerpt from their application essay...

Lue Vang

English at Teacher Training College

“I and my parents work hard and are very busy, but we can make a little food and money. When I saw People who live in the countryside, like my family that are poor. What should I do? I think there is only one way that can help us is to study high.”

Phonephachane Phonethamy

IT at Souphanouvong University

“I want to study information technology subject at Soupanouvong University, but my family is a poor family and don’t have the cost for the term and the education is very important for me and everyone too. The country needs people who have knowledge and if we have an education or diploma we can get a good job. It would be very important to me and my family to be given this opportunity.”

BeeSaVang Porsengvong

Tourism at Souphanouvong University

“In my future I want to be a good guide and know many languages to teach Lao kids and develop my hometown.” BeeSaVang currently is learning English and Japanese. He helps teach Japanese to kids at the JWOC Language School.

Chitttavanh “Kim” Chanthanome

Accounting and Marketing at the Financial College

“There are many people need and deserve the scholarship because everybody wants to get the best education, but in Laos the government can’t give people some scholarship because Laos is poverty country. If Lao people don’t have education development of Laos is slowly and Lao people don’t have jobs.”

Hmong Her

English at Teacher Training College

“Education is very important because if I don’t have education I will seem a blind person and I can not help any people. So, I will intend to learn hard as much as I can to have opportunity to help teaching the public who need helping.”
