Meet some of our students

1st year – Koemhong

Koemhong became a JWOC scholarship student in November 2010, beginning his first year at Build Bright University studying Tourism and Hospitality. Originally from Battambang Province, he came to Siem Reap in 2008, where his older sister and her family live, to finish his High School studies. Having completed his studies in the summer of 2010, he successfully applied for JWOC’s High School Graduate Internship and spent a month working with visiting volunteers from the UK to run JWOC’s annual “Big Holiday Activities” for local children. As a scholarship student, he now volunteers in the Free Classes project and continues to work with children, teaching his own English class. Koemhong is the first member of his family to be able to go to university and his ambition is to get a good job in the tourism industry as a manager in a hotel. This ambition, matched with his open and outgoing personality make him a great student and a wonderful member of the JWOC Free Classes team!

2nd year – Bopha

Bopha is an example of how a person with a very difficult life has seized her chance with the opportunities that organizations offer in Siem Reap. During her high school education, she got involved with a local organisation called PEPY Ride, where she was able to get work experience as a volunteer. The staff at PEPY encouraged her to apply for a JWOC scholarship after she aced her High School Diploma. Her talent, drive, commitment and dreams for a better future made her stand out in the scholarship application process and she was accepted as a JWOC student in October 2009. Bopha is now studying in her second year of an English major at the University of South East Asia and is an exceptional student. She volunteers as a kindergarten teacher in JWOC’s Free Classes programme and spends four hours in the classroom every week helping pre-school children with their first steps in learning including reading and writing in English and Khmer! We look forward to watching and sharing in her success as she progresses through her higher education.

3rd year – Saveak

Saveak joined the Scholarship programme in the 2008-2009 academic year as a new university student. She has blossomed through this opportunity and has moved seamlessly into the third year of her Banking and Finance degree. As JWOC’s first kindergarten teacher, Saveak came in every weekday to give her pre-school students their first opportunity to learn how to read and write both in Khmer and English. In June 2010, she joined three other successful candidates on a three month internship at JWOC. She spent these three months learning about community work, shadowing our project managers and assisting them with their daily tasks. At the beginning of her third year, she transferred to JWOC's Microfinance project to build her experience in her chosen area of expertise. Saveak has a wonderfully warm personality and her infectious smiles and positivity make for a bright and successful future.

4th year – Monnoreth

Monnoreth has been a JWOC scholarship student since 2007 studying IT at Build Bright University. Before getting his scholarship, he was struggling to make ends meet as a motorbike taxi driver in Siem Reap. As a JWOC scholarship student his possibilities in life have turned around. He is thriving at university, has a regular job for the Apsara Authority (working in the Angkor Wat complex) and has been helping JWOC with its Clean-Water project for around three years now. He is a lively and fun member of the group and is always willing to come and help JWOC in his spare time, whether it is scouting out new villages, taking JWOC donors to see their wells or processing a delivery of ceramic water filters. He hopes for a high tech future working with computers.
