Career Development
In 2009, JWOC was able to introduce for the first time, career assistance to scholarship students, through a morning of CV and cover letter training. Building on this foundation, 2010 has seen the introduction of a structured series of compulsory workshops for all scholarship students covering multiple career development skills. These included: Skill identification, finding jobs and applying for the right jobs; writing a good CV; Cover Letters; Interviews; and Networking and how to meet people.
Watch this space as the workshops unfold!
Workshop 1: Skill Identification, finding jobs and applying for the right jobs.
Sunday 13th June and Sunday 20th June 2010
This two hour workshop, held twice over the course of two weekends, gave students practical tips in recognizing what skills they have to offer, how to recognize what employers are looking for when they advertise. Workshop 5: Networking and How to Meet People
Sunday 8th August and Sunday 15th August 2010
The final workshop in the series encouraged students to think about ways in which to increase their chances of finding the right job. The session began by raising students' awareness of how many potential contacts they may already have access to and tips on how to expand their network. The second half focused on the practical elements of actually meeting people, what to say, how to present themselves and how to give themselves the best chance of getting where they want to be. JWOC staff and some of our TravelAid volunteers posed as potential contacts in a large role play situation in which students had to try to get as many "business cards" as possible in 20 minutes through impressing people with their networking skills!

August 2010: Careers Fair and Graduation!
On Sunday 29 August JWOC held its first Careers Fair. The event brought together more than 26 companies, hotels, banks, universities, schools and charitable organisations in Siem Reap. Over 290 university students attended the event, including JWOC’s own scholarship students and graduates. Students were able to meet managers and ask questions about their work and seek advice on the most important skills for finding jobs. Presentations were also held throughout the morning on management skills and the attributes managers look for when hiring and promoting staff. It was a great opportunity for the students to receive useful advice and learn more about possible career opportunities. JWOC would like to thank all the organisations and students who participated to make the fair such a success.
Following the fair JWOC held a graduation ceremony and lunch for the 20 JWOC scholarship students, who have completed their university degrees this year. This was a wonderful opportunity for JWOC to say congratulations and thank you to all our final year students in front of the wider community. The day ended with a graduation party at JWOC for all the JWOC Scholarship students, graduates and staff.
JWOC would like to thank Jim Borgman for his very generous sponsorship of this event
