Reading and Drawing Class
In January 2010 the JWOC Language School added the Reading and Drawing Class. As opposed to the language classes offered at the school, this class is open to all students in the community and no registration is required. So many students desire to study at the school but find they cannot because they lack the free time, ability to commit to a full term, or want to attend an English class after the term has begun. This class gives them the opportunity to join in anytime.
The Reading and Drawing Class gives students access to materials they do not normally have access to so that they can explore their creative side, improve their skills and just have fun. These are materials we take for granted in the western world such as, books, coloring books, crayons, paints, puzzles, etc. This class has over a hundred books available in Lao, English and Hmong. The books range in level of reading abilities for both Lao and English readers with the subject matter varying from Lao History and culture to classic English stories to books that deal with health education and art.
The class is offered 5 times a week for an hour and divided into 3 parts in order to maximize the time as efficiently as possible. Along with a time allotted for reading, the class has both game and drawing segments. Thus, students are able to work together through these activities while having fun as a class and expanding their knowledge and skills creatively.
