JWOC Free Classes Programme – Laos

Welcome to our Free Classes, Laos page. Here you can find out more details about what classes we offer in Laos and more information about the programme in general.

The free classes offered in Laos are held in the Muang Nga Primary School building outside the town center of Luang Prabang - the ancient capital of Laos and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The school is located in the village of Muang Nga which is the closest village to town with the largest concentration of an ethnic minority. The ethnic minority of the Hmong tribe dominates the student body at both the Primary School and the JWOC free classes. With free classes offered at Muang Nga, many Hmong students now have the opportunity to learn another language.

JWOC has been holding free language classes in the afternoons and weekends at the Muang Nga School since September 2008, offering English and Japanese classes to students from 6 to 20 years of age. Since this time JWOC has been able to install electricity and ceiling fans in the classrooms along with giving the building a fresh coat of paint. Recently we have been able to provide much needed new desks and benches to two of the five classrooms in the older building. Not only are these improvements benefiting the JWOC classes but also the Primary school and local community.

Currently JWOC offers English classes every day of the week after regular school ends in the late afternoon and throughout the day on the weekends. The English classes offer a range in levels for student’s aged 10-20 years. All of the classes use approved texts and follow a set schedule. With this curriculum the students are able to graduate through the different levels increasing their knowledge and speaking abilities. JWOC ensures that they receive the most out of this free education through limits on class numbers, regular testing and homework.

The classes are taught by the JWOC Laos scholarship students, who devote 5 hours of their free time a week to the school. These students desire to be teachers or work in the tourism industry so this allows them the chance to gain crucial experience for their future. Not only are they giving back and helping younger generations but also receiving the opportunity to continuously practice their English. Through this practice they are also able to gain confidence in their abilities and public speaking. As JWOC English teachers they are given the platform in which to continue their education beyond their studies.

Our classes offer something rare to the Lao students - a free education. The classes provide educational opportunities for young, motivated Laos students who would not otherwise have been able to afford them and with your support we will be able to continue and grow offering more classes and experiences to communities in Luang Prabang.
