Our Projects

University ScholarshipsThe ability to attend university and achieve a higher education is well beyond the reach of most students in Southeast Asia even if they are able to graduate from high school. Through donor sponsorships, JWOC gives university scholarships to deserving Cambodian, Laotian and Burmese students. The JWOC scholarship students are the driving force behind everything we do. In return for receiving a scholarship, each student volunteers 5 to 10 hours per week on a JWOC project of their choice. Read more about our Scholarship Program... |

JWOC SchoolsThe public school systems in Southeast Asia continue to be plagued by poor facilities, uneducated teachers, and at their worst, rampant corruption. This can lead to dismal educational opportunities, however eager the children are to learn. JWOC sponsors and manages three language schools in Cambodia and Laos to try to add to their sometimes limited education. These schools provide free classes daily to approximately 300 children and adults ranging in age from 10 to 30 years old. Read more about our Educational Programs... |

MicrofinanceJWOC’s microfinance program gives the poor the ability to borrow money at fair interest rates so they can start a business or expand an existing one. By offering small businesses the opportunity of credit, JWOC hopes that borrowers will be able to build a stronger business and be able to better their lives. Small loans, sometimes as little as $100, in the hands of an ambitious entrepreneur can transform the lives of individuals and families. Read more about our Financial Programs... |

Clean WaterOne of the most pressing resource issues facing rural villagers in Cambodia is a lack of clean drinking water. Currently, villagers and residents of remote areas drink from pools of standing water or from streams and canals. In both cases, the water is contaminated with bacteria and polluted with waste. JWOC installs hand-pumped wells in locations where they can be easily shared by multiple families. JWOC also works on creating sustainable solutions with the Well Maintenance Program and Health Seminars. Read more about our Clean Water Projects... |

Emergency ReliefLarge scale disasters such as the 2004 Tsunami or Hurricane Katrina drew international media attention, support and relief efforts. However, small scale disasters, both natural and man made, occur with unfortunate frequency within developing countries. In these situations there is no media reporting on the events and no social or government programs to aid those in need. JWOC has been able to coordinate highly successful relief efforts in many of these situations. Read more about our Emergency and Disaster Relief Efforts... |

Local School SupportMany schools and families throughout the region of Southeast Asia struggle to afford some of the most basic things needed for education. JWOC aims to create partnerships with local schools to help them with essential needs such as uniforms for students, books to read and teach from, and sometimes bicycles so children can actually get to school. Partnerships depend on the involvement of the school and village community and can go as far as providing classrooms and bathroom facilities for students.
