Dollars for Scholars University Students

Sokthea        Chhorm Ley is a 23-year-old who has completed two years at Angkor University.  He studies management and works as a computer teacher for JWOC.  Ley lives with his uncle in Siem Reap and on his free time he helps his uncle on the farm or plays football with his friends.

Ley is from a village 35 km east of Siem Reap. He manages to see his family once a month.  His parents are rice farmers and he has four sisters and four brothers, all of which live back home.  All of his brothers and sisters, except for his youngest brother, stopped their education after primary school and work as farmers.  His younger brother is continuing his education.  Ley is the only one in his village to attend a university. He wants to continue his education in order to get a better job and help support his family.

After working at Wat Drum Neak teaching English for four months, Ley switched to teaching computers.  He enjoys teaching, and would like to see more children study computers because of the skills taught that will help them get better jobs working in the tourism industry.  Ley works as a mini-bar checker at a local hospital from 6am to 3pm, then teaches for an hour and studies at the university from 5:30pm to 8:45pm.  He finds it difficult to study in Siem Reap because of the noise. In high school he used to go into the jungle to study because it was quiet.

Ley would like to be a teacher and go back to his village to help the rural children who do not have access to education, as well as stress the importance of education to Cambodia’s future.  Eventually he would like to work for an organization or company.  When he has enough money Ley would like to open a bookstore in Siem Reap, selling schoolbooks and educational material.  He thinks Cambodia needs to address is the corruption within the government, the development of education and problem of homeless people being displaced from their villages due to poverty.

Ley would like to see JWOC expand the computer classes for students who cannot afford to learn about computers any other way.
