Dollars for Scholars University Students

Sokthea Kunthy is an active 21 year old man originally from Kandal Province.  He currently teaches a computer class at Wat Thmei Language School for JWOC.  In his spare time he enjoys reading books, listening to the radio, and playing basketball.

Like many of the other scholarship students, Kunthy grew up working in the rice fields with his parents, who still live in Kandal Province.  He has 3 brothers and 3 sisters, all younger than him.  Working on the farm was very difficult and a daily strain on his body.  JWOC is a welcome relief for him, and he very much enjoys teaching computer skills to the multitude of children who come on a daily basis.  He hopes that the students will be able to take tangible skills from his class and will, in the future, be able to develop quality documents for their jobs.

Kunthy believes that education is the biggest problem facing Cambodia today, as without a quality education, young adults will be left only with simple farming as their career.  He feels that the booming tourism industry in Siem Reap offers many great jobs—education is needed in order to prepare students to fill them.

Kunthy majors in Tourism Studies at Angkor University, where he is in his second year.  After his studies are finished in 2 years, he hopes to work at a hotel and teach English at a local high school or tourism at a university in his free time.  He hopes that JWOC will continue its focus on education, clean water, and loans to the local community.
