JWOC MOVIE

This movie gives a brief overview of JWOC's development projects in Cambodia and introduces you to some of JWOC's university scholarship students. It also provides a look into some of the local communities and people who are benefiting from JWOC's projects. The movie was filmed and edited by two JWOC volunteers, Liron and Nitzan. We greatly appreciate the time and effort they gave putting the movie together.

May 2008 “You don’t have to wear a shirt to do good. Brook Wilkinson goes luxe in Southeast Asia and figures out how to give back, too.

“You took the helicopter ride around the temples of Angkor Wat? How much does that cost?” the monk asked, his eyes showing an incomprehension that his shaved eyebrows could not. Appearing daily in his saffron robes, he was a standout student in the advanced English class that I was helping to teach. “Two hundred and fifty dollars,” I replied, staring ashamedly at the wooden desk in front of me. Over the course of my thirty-minute joyride, I realized I’d doled out more than many Cambodians earn in a year.

“I had come to Cambodia on a luxury volunteer vacation arranged through Journeys Within, a tour operator run by an American couple based in Siem Reap. I’d be spending about half of my time – as most visitors to Cambodia do – exploring Phnom Penh and the cultural relics of Angkor Wat, staying at high-end hotels and touring with private guides. On the other days, I’d be volunteering with the tour operator’s nonprofit Journeys Within Our Community (JWOC). At best, I hoped to alleviate some of the guilt that comes with being a moneyed traveler in the developing world...”

March/April 2008 "On January 23, 2008 a fire swept through a tight cluster of thatch houses located just a few kilometers from Angkow Wat and in a matter of minutes 36 homes were burned to the ground leaving hundreds of people with no shelter and only the clothes the wore.

The staff at Journeys Within Our Community (JWOC) a locally based non-profit organiztion, heard of the fire and arrived early the following morning to determine if JWOC could be of any help. With no social services for the people to fall back on, no savings and no insurance, the mothers and fathers truly had no where to turn..."

Issue 7 " JWOC launches dental hygiene initiative: ‘Journeys Within Our Community (JWOC)’ say dental caries are one of the most common and preventable diseases in childhood and the lack of proper oral care is at the root of the problem. Teaming up with two dentists who own their clinic in Zurich,Switzerland, JWOC started a program at local schools where children are provided with a toothbrush, a large tube of toothpaste, and a class on both the methods and importance of brushing properly.

The total cost? US$1.25 per child. Each week, a JWOC scholarship student follows up with the classes to ensure that a brushing routine is being maintained and none of the children need new supplies. JWOC is asking for donations which will help the organisation to help expand its initiative."
