JWOC Founders
- Brandon Ross
After completing his BA in Political Science and working as an accountant, Brandon Ross answered the call to travel. He has explored England, Italy, Germany, France, Central America, the Caribbean, Southern Africa, New Zealand, Australia, the South Pacific, China and Japan. In 2002, he moved to Cambodia with his wife to start Journeys Within Bed and Breakfast and Tour Company.

Brandon founded Journeys Within Our Community (JWOC) in 2005 as a response to the poverty he witnessed in his community of Siem Reap, Cambodia. Being a real people person, Brandon fell in love with Cambodia, and is dedicated to seeing improved living conditions throughout Southeast Asia.
         
                     
- Andrea Ross  

With British parents, Andrea grew up in England listening to stories of Africa and the Far East. At the age of eight she took her first solo trip to Australia to visit her aunt and she hasn’t stopped traveling since.

Andrea has been to England, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Southern Africa – where she worked as an assistant canoe guide for a safari company, Kenya, Tanzania – where she summited Kilimanjaro, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Belize, the South Pacific, China and Japan.

Chair of the Board - Philippa Nigg  
Philippa Nigg was raised in Southern Africa before moving to England to raise her children. Philippa received her masters degree in the U.K. and after working in a variety of careers became a teacher.

Currently, Philippa is retired and enjoys sailing around the world with her husband of more than thirty years. She has visited over thirty countries in her extensive travels and loves her visits to Southeast Asia, especially Cambodia. Now calling America home, Philippa brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to JWOC.

Treasurer - Rebecca Johnson
Rebecca Johnson has a passion for helping others. Rebecca has been involved in many non-profit activities including fundraising for an AIDS charity in San Diego, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, YMCA youth counselor, and intern in the International Department of the US Chamber of Commerce. Rebecca is currently a Program Director for a Capital Fund-raising Consulting firm working to raise money for non-profits.

In her spare time, Rebecca enjoys traveling all over the world. She has also lived and studied in sub-Saharan Africa before receiving her BS/BA from the University of California, San Diego.

Secretary - John Walsh

John Walsh was the first Managing Director from 2005 - 2008 and helped to start,develop, and manage the organization from its conception. Although John has stepped down from the day to day running of JWOC, he continues to stay actively involved with strategic planning ofprojects and fundraising development.

John has traveled extensively throughout Southeast Asia including Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Burma and Cambodia. It was after graduating from UC Davis with a B.A. in Political Science that John moved to work in Scotland, where he developed a passion for travel and exploration of different cultures.

Officer - Donna McAleer

Donna McAleer lives in Park City, Utah, and holds an MBA from the Darden School at the University of Virginia and a BS in Organizational Dynamics and Leadership and General Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Donna served as the Executive Director of the People’s Health Clinic in Park City, and brings an extensive background in operations management, marketing, customer service and logistics and non-profit management to help JWOC.

Donna serves as a board member of several community not-for-profit organizations. She is president of her West Point class and serves of the board of advisors to West-Point.org and the Association of Graduates at West Point. Donna is also on the board of directors of West Point Women’s Network, and previously served as an officer in the United States Army with the 3rd Infantry Division in Wuerzburg, Germany.

She is an avid outdoor enthusiast with a particular passion for skiing, snowshoeing,mountain biking, hiking, golfing and traveling. Donna's extensive travels have taken her to Europe and Asia including Thailand, Cambodia, Burma and Bhutan.

Officer - Dr. Loren O'Connor

Dr. Loren O’Connor has been a psychologist in both inner city and suburban school districts in California.  His experience includes psycho educational assessments, crisis intervention, staff development, special education support services and individual and group therapy.  Dr. O’Connor has provided counseling services for children, adolescents and adults in his private practice. 

Dr. O’Connor was appointed by the Governor of California to the State Child Abuse Prevention Committee.  He is frequently a guest and consultant for national television and radio shows.  Serving as an advocate for children and people with special needs, he lectures at conferences and universities. 

Dr. O’Connor demonstrates an outstanding ability in understanding the educational and social needs of diverse student populations.  He has both undergraduate and graduate teaching experience in psychology. He has resided in Europe and Israel, as well as traveled extensively in Asia, Europe, South America, South East Asia and the Middle East.

  Officer - Travis Carley

Travis Carley is an Assistant Vice President for CCS Fund Raising, and provides fund-raising counsel to a variety of non-profit organizations.  In the past five years, he has assisted non-profits in raising more than $200 million to advance their missions, and has had the opportunity to work extensively in international fund raising.

Travis lives in Chicago, IL, USA and earned his B.A. in Economics and German from the University of Michigan.  Before beginning his career as a fund-raising consultant, Travis spent two years as a rock-climbing instructor.

Cambodia Country Advisor - Phay Narla

Narla Phay was born in Banteay Mean Chey Province which is near the border of Thailand. His parents are farmers and he is the first son in his family. He graduated high school in 2003 and his parents sent him to a private university in Siem Reap.

Narla decided to study Tourism and Hospitality Management in 2003. His mother borrowed the money from the people in the village with high interest for his school tuition. He almost stopped his studies at the university because his parents did not have the ability to pay for school tuition, but luckily he met Bandon Ross at the tourist police office. Narla applied for a JWOC scholarship and was selected.

He is the first JWOC scholarship student to have finished his studies and graduate university. Narla has worked with all of the JWOC projects during his time with the organization. Now he serves in an advisory role regarding all of JWOC's projects in Cambodia.

Officer - Dawn Johnson  

Dawn and her husband of 36 years, Jay, live in the San Francisco Bay Area with Chance The Wonder Dog and an aged horse that just stands around. After earning an M.A. and teaching credential from U.C. Berkeley, Dawn spent 10 years rhapsodizing about pronouns in secondary schools, then enjoyed some time as a freelance writer and principal of a parent education seminar service. She recently retired after 15 years as Manager of Educational Services and Strategic Projects for a metropolitan newspaper chain. Son Travis works in the Bay Area tech industry and daughter Rebecca is a fund-raising consultant in Chicago, as well as a member of the JWOC Board. Dawn has a long history of volunteerism in schools and community organizations, including service as the principal regional administrator for an international non-profit for youth equestrians. Dawn had the pleasure of watching JWOC’s co-founder, Andrea, grow up and is enthusiastic about supporting this dedicated and talented team in their creative efforts to “see a problem and solve a problem.”
